Our school were given the fantastic opportunity to play rugby at half time during the Wales v England U20 International at Parc Eirias.
Pupils from Year 5 and 6 have been attending an after school rugby session for the last few weeks with Mr Roberts, Mr Wilkinson and past pupil Patrick Wregglesworth. They have been learning the basic skills of rugby through in a simplified format called 'Tag Rugby'. Ten pupils were chosen to represent the school in a match against Ysgol Craig y Don. The game took place on the pitch at half time in front of 7,000 fans. There was some fine running and passing on display from both teams and the match ended 4-4. The teams were then paraded around the pitch to the cheers and applause of the capacity crowd. Unfortunately, the senior Welsh players didn't perform so well as they list to a very powerful English team. This was a fantastic experience for our pupils and their behaviour was excellent. Well done everybody. Also, much appreciation must be given to Mr Roberts for arranging the event and supervising the children on a cold, wet Friday night. Year 6 have been studying WWII and decided to invite older family members to come into school to talk about the war. They prepared questions to ask our visitors and then went about planning a very special coffee morning.
They shared out tasks and worked really hard to make the event a fantastic success. Their preparations involved baking cakes, making menus and posters, creating scenic backdrops, selecting appropriate music and making videos. During the event several pupils served the tables and those adults who attended shared their stories about the war. Many brought along items to show the children. Every single child was fascinated with the stories told and their behaviour was impeccable. The adults congratulated our pupils on their excellent questions, good manners and enthusiasm. This was a wonderful occasion. Thanks must also go to Mrs Martens who organised the event and Mrs Aspinall and Mrs Gelezinis who helped to make it such a success. |
